Computational Modeling Fall 2008 For today, you should: 1) finish your work in Chapter 1 of my book and finish writing Chapter 1 of your book 2) take a break from swappy books By the end of class Friday, your Chapter 1 should be ready to be evaluated. Today: 0) assign peer evaluators 1) questions from Chapter 2? 2) work time For next time you should: 1) read the next chapter from a swappy book 2) continue reading my Chapter 2 3) start evaluating someone else's Chapter 1 Peer evaluation --------------- Today we will assign peer evaluators by lottery. I would like the process to be anonymous, but if it is appropriate to break anonymity, we might, and if it happens accidentally, it will not be the end of the world. But in general, you should never write anything anonymously that you would not be willing to stand behind! Among other things, that means that you should consider the TONE of what you write carefully. It is OK to express a negative judgment if you think it is appropriate, but be careful not to let the words write themselves. (I am warning you about this because it is a personal failing of mine.) 0) Write your name on the index card as it appears in the repository, so I would write "allen.downey" 1) Choose a card and download your evaluatee's directory from the repository: svn --username=your.name co http://svn.allendowney.com/cm08/eval.name 2) Try to compile the book. If it doesn't work, let me know. 3) You should read the entire chapter by Tuesday, and write a peer evaluation by Friday. The evaluation form is at http://wb/cm/handouts/rubric.pdf 4) You should also write a self evaluation for Friday. I recommend that you do the peer evaluation first and then re-read your chapter with fresh eyes. Your books do not all have to be the same, so you can admire something that someone else did without feeling guilty for not doing it! If you see something you like, you might want to emulate it, but don't just track the center of the herd. 5) On Friday, you should bring TWO copies of the Evaluation form to class, one for your self-evaluation, one for your peer evaluation. a) Please print double sided! If you can't print double-sided, print single-sided and then copy onto double-sides. I want ONE sheet of paper per evaluation. b) DO write your name on your self evaluation. c) DO NOT write your name on your peer evaluation. Instead, please write your name on a postit note and stick it on the evaluation.
